It is difficult to say when an object becomes a monument. Time and distance are obvious factors. It could be argued that these have more relevance than any intentionality in the creation of a monument. Perhaps the meaning of a monument can only be fully understood when all current knowledge about it has passed away - when the monument is truly Other and can therefore be imbued solely with the individual interpretations and meanings of each onlooker.
